Scotland's Wild West Coast: A Motorhome Road Trip Guide
From Oban to Ullapool, the west coast of Scotland is one of Europe's great road trip destinations. Here's how to plan the perfect motorhome adventure.
Overview
Scotland's west coast stretches from the rolling hills of Argyll all the way to the dramatic landscapes of Wester Ross. The NC500 gets all the attention, but the A82 and A87 corridors offer equally stunning scenery with fewer crowds.
Best Time to Visit
June to August offers the longest days and warmest weather. May and September are often ideal — fewer midges, quieter roads and still enough daylight for exploring.
Recommended Campsites
- Oban Caravan & Motorhome Club Site — excellent facilities, ferry links
- Glen Nevis Caravan & Camping Park — stunning mountain backdrop
- Sligachan Campsite, Skye — right under the Cuillins
Must-See Attractions
- Eilean Donan Castle
- Isle of Skye (Fairy Pools, Old Man of Storr)
- Glencoe
- Inveraray Castle
- Loch Lomond
Driving Tips
Many roads are single-track with passing places. Take your time, use passing places to let faster traffic through, and never reverse more than necessary — let the longer vehicle make the decision.
